The character
Palmetto Bluff is the Lowcountry at its most deliberate — a roughly 20,000-acre master-planned community wrapped around the May, Cooper, and New rivers in Bluffton, where a large share of the land is held in conservation and the architecture answers to some of the strictest design guidelines in the region. It grew up in the early 2000s around Wilson Village, and it still reads like a town that arrived slowly rather than a subdivision stamped out at once.
At its heart sit the Montage Palmetto Bluff resort, the white-clapboard chapel, and the moss-hung ruins of the old Wilson mansion on the bluff. Life is organized into villages — Wilson, Moreland, and newer neighborhoods still being added — each with its own gathering places, and stewarded by the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy, whose naturalist and archaeology programs give the place its unusual sense of care.
