The character

Hilton Head Plantation is the island's quiet giant. At roughly 4,000 acres on Hilton Head's north end, it's the largest gated community on the island and one of the largest in the Lowcountry — laid out beginning in 1970, and wrapped on three sides by water: Port Royal Sound to the north, Skull Creek and the Intracoastal Waterway to the west, and Broad Creek to the south.

That residential character is the whole point. Where Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes court the vacation crowd, "HHP" reads as a settled, year-round neighborhood of roughly four thousand homes — four golf courses, two nature conservancies, and miles of leisure trails inside its gates, but no beachfront-resort bustle. The historic Fort Mitchel earthwork and the Old Fort Pub sit on the bluff over Skull Creek, and the Dolphin Head recreation area looks out on Port Royal Sound, giving the community its own waterfront without the tourist tide.
